13897424 - The 5-day-old waxing crescent Moon near the Beehive star cluster, Messier 44, in Cancer on the evening of May 10, 2019, set in the deep blue twilight sky, and with Earthshine still visible on the dark side of the Moon.
13899522 - Colors have not been exaggerated or faked in -- sky was blue, moon was orange.
13897963 - The 4-day-old waxing crescent Moon on April 8, 2019 in a blend of short and long exposures to bring out the faint Earthshine on the dark side of the Moon and deep blue twilight sky while retaining details in the bright sunlit crescent.
13897949 - The rising nearly Full Moon of December 19, 2021, above a snowy prairie scene with a lone tree, and the cold blue twilight lighting the snow, contrasting with the pink of the Belt of Venus above. The Moon is partly in a narrow band of cloud and is exhibiting a slight green flash phenomenon on its distorted upper edge, and red limb on its lower edge from atmospheric dispersion.
13897834 - A composite stack of 12 images taken June 11/12, 2017 of the waning gibbous Moon tracking low across the southern sky on a June nght, from moonrise at left at 11:30 pm to when it began to leave the frame at right at 4 a.m. and when the sky was brightening with dawn. Images are at 25-minute intervals. The sky is blue here from the moonlight.
13900496 - An arc of modest aurora borealis (Northern Lights) across the northern horizon, above a prairie meadow in the light of a bright waxing gibbous Moon, a day before Full. This was just after midnight on July 11/12, 2022 when the sky was also still lit by summer twilight colours, and with a weak display of noctilucent clouds also visible low in the northwest at left. The auroral curtains exhibit the usual green band and rays, but also upper altitude reds and purples and a faint blue tint at the very tops where the aurora is lit by the Sun. The aurora was never bright this night (Kp Index was 3 or
13900221 - A subtle and pastel aurora borealis (Northern Lights) in the northeast, above a prairie meadow at "Lone Tree Hill". The foreground and sky are lit by a bright waxing gibbous Moon, a day before Full, shining in the south. This was just after midnight on July 11/12, 2022. The auroral curtains exhibit the usual green band and rays, though with shades of green visible, perhaps from hydrogen-beta proton emission as well as oxygen electron emission, but also upper altitude reds and purples and a faint blue tint at the very tops where the aurora is lit by the Sun. The aurora was never bright this nig
13900038 - The rising nearly Full Moon of December 19, 2021, above a snowy prairie scene with a lone tree, and with the cold blue twilight lighting the snow, contrasting with the pink of the Belt of Venus above.
13820750 - Moon and rainbow arch in blue sky over Horseshoe Niagara Falls Ontario Canada
13900366 - The waxing gibbous Moon above the blue shadow of the Earth and pink Belt of Venus band, with dark blue crepuscular rays converging on the anti-solar point in the east, at sunset, from the badlands of Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta. Part of a 450-frame time-lapse sequence, taken with the Canon 5D MkII and 24mm lens on the Radian motion controller.
13899810 - A selfie of me observing Mars, the bright object at top, in Taurus, on a mild winter night from home on December 9, 2022. Mars was then two days past opposition and at its brightest. The waning gibbous Moon is the bright glow at left, lighting the sky blue and the snowy landscape below with sparkling moonlight. Orion is rising behind me, while Gemini is at far left.
13899282 - A wide-angle view of the total eclipse of the Moon of November 8, 2022, with the red Moon at right amid the stars of the northern winter sky and Milky Way, plus with bright red Mars at top. Above and left of the Moon is the blue Pleiades star cluster, while below it and to the left is the larger Hyades cluster with reddish Aldebaran in Taurus. The stars of Orion are left of centre, including reddish Betelgeuse, while at far left are the two Dog Stars: Procyon, at top, in Canis Minor, and Sirius, at bottom, in Canis Major.
13898578 - The Full Moon at the equinox, on March 20, 2019, reaching full phase only fours hours after the moment of the vernal equinox, and here captured rising very shortly before the moment of the Full Moon. I shot this while the Moon was still rising and in a deep blue sky, and tinted yellow from atmospheric absorption. Even so, this is a blend of short (for the Moon) and long (for the sky) exposures to capture the dynamic range.
13998604 - The conjunction of the waxing 4-day-old crescent Moon below the Pleiades, and set in a slightly hazy sky on March 25,2023. The haze adds the colourful "lunar corona" halo around the bright crescent of the Moon from diffraction effects in the high icy clouds. Shot before the sky got dark, the remaining twilight adds the blue to the background sky. Earthshine is visible on the dark side of the Moon.
13986963 - Rock formation in Monument Valley,Arizona, with the moon in a clear blue sky. The red rock glows at sunset as the light hits them,Arizona,United States of America

14248855 - A weak Kp1-level aurora with a hint of dual parallel arcs in the northeast seen in a moonlit sky, February 14, 2024, from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Churchill, Manitoba. Arcturus is at right, Vega at lower left. The waxing crescent Moon provides the illumination and blue sky.
13900113 - The rising almost-Full Moon, a “Blue Moon” of July 30, 2015, rising behind a rustic old farmhouse near Bow Island, Alberta. The Moon sits in the pibk Belt of Venus with the blue shadow of the Earth below. This is a single frame from a 600-frame time-lapse sequence, taken with the Canon 6D and 16-35mm lens.
13898242 - The Full Moon rising in partial eclipse on the night of September 27, 2015, night of a total eclipse that began with the partial phase in progress at moonrise from my location. The pink Belt of Venus colours the sky at top. The Moon sits in the blue shadow of the Earth, which also partly obscures the disk of the Moon.
13898054 - The International Space Station (ISS) flying away to the east over the moonlit badlands formations at Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, on July 12, 2022, just before local midnight. The image frames the stars of Cassiopeia (upper left), Perseus (at left), Andromeda (centre) and Pegasus (at right). A couple of other fainter satellites are also in the image. Light from the almost Full Moon illuminates the sky blue and foreground a warm colour.
13998979 - The "Super Blue Moon" of August 30,2023 rising over a yet-to-be-harvested wheatfield in southern Alberta,on the night of August 30,2023. This was the second Full Moon of the month (making it a "blue Moon" by popular definition) and it was the closest Full Moon of 2023 (making it also a "super Moon" by another popular definition).
13900291 - The northern summer Milky Way setting over the mountains of Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada, with warm golden lighting supplied by the rising waning Moon (behind the camera) illuminating the landscape and sky in a “moonstrike” effect. Taken on September 21, 2019, in frames taken as part of a time-lapse. Faint bands of red airglow tint the sky, though the blue sky colour is from the moonlight. This is taken during the lunar “golden hour.”
13899925 - The Full Moon of July 11, 2014, dubbed a "supermoon" as it ocurred within a day of perigee, rising over the sandstone concretions of Red Rock Coulee Natural Area in southern Alberta. The Moon sits just above the pink Belt of Venus and the dark blue shadow of the Earth rising in the east.
13899571 - The Full Moon of August 31, 2012 (which was a "Blue Moon" -- i.e. the second Full Moon of the month) rising over a harvested field, with windmills of the Wintering Hill wind farm. The pink Belt of Venus band is visible above the blue band above the horizon that is Earth's shadow. This is a 6-exposure HDR stack taken with the Canon 7D at ISO 100 and 16-35mm lens. Metered exposures.
13897786 - The rising of the almost Full Moon (1 day before full) on September 12, 2019, taken from home in a quick shot, looking over the old rake I often use for a foreground prop. The dark blue in the sky near the horizon is the shadow of the Earth rising.
13999483 - The rising of the Full Moon just before Easter weekend,on Wednesday,April 5,2023,with Good Friday two days later on April 7. The Moon appears quite pink and in a bright blue sky,as moonrise this night was a few minutes before sunset. However, the Sun was in clouds to the northwest and not lighting the foreground.
13998597 - The Hoodoos formation near Banff,Alberta,on the Tunnel Mountain Drive, overlooking the Bow River and Mount Rundle, with the stars and Milky Way in the sky. Illumination is by starlight, twilight sky colours, and lights from Banff in the distance. The sky is bright and blue with summer twilight, and from the waxing Moon low in the sky behind Mount Rundle.
13998433 - This was the nearly Full Moon on August 29,2023,on the night before the official "Super Blue Full Moon" of August 30. I shot it here when it was still low in the sky and yellowed by smoke and dust, and set in the deep blue twilight sky.
13998361 - The rising Full Moon of January 6,2023 over the Badlands of Horseshoe Canyon, near Drumheller,Alberta. Here the Moon is set in the pink Belt of Venus and with dark blue crepuscular rays (or more correctly,anti-crepuscular rays) converging on the point directly opposite the Sun. The rays are shadows cast by clouds in the west, which parted enough for a few moments for the setting Sun to light the foreground, making for a colourful contrast between ground and sky.
13900093 - An all-sky aurora with green and purple curtains, the night of June 7-8, 2014, starting up about 12:30 and going until dawn. This shot was near its peak, from the old barn site near home in southern Alberta. Foreground illumination is from the aurora and ambient sky -- the Moon had set. The Big Dipper is above the Barn. The purple colour is from blue scatttered sunlight hitting the red tops of the auroral curtains. This was with the 16-35mm lens at f/3.2 for 20 seconds at ISO 1600 with the Canon 6D.
13899985 - The Milky Way over Athabasca Glacier and the Columbia Icefields in Jasper National Park, Sept 14, 2014 on a very clear night before moonrise. The centre of the Galaxy area in Sagittarius is setting in the southwest behind the Icefields. The foreground light on the moraines is wash from lights on the Glacier View Inn and Icefields Centre. Other ground illumination on the peaks is from starlight though the tops of the peaks are just being lit by light from the rising waning Moon which is also beginning to light the sky a deep blue. Mt. Andromeda is at left. The Summer Triangle stars are at centr
13898062 - The Columbia Icefields and Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park, just before the waning Moon rose over the mountains to light the foreground, but as it was already lighting the peaks around the Icefields. The Milky Way is fading into the blue sky of a moonlit night. The Moon is rising just left of centre below the Pleiades cluster. The Big Dipper is at far left to the north.
13898027 - An all-sky aurora with green and purple curtains, the night of June 7-8, 2014, starting up about 12:30 and going until dawn.
13998498 - The "Super Blue Moon" of August 30,2023 rising over a yet-to-be-harvested wheatfield in southern Alberta,on the night of August 30,2023. This was the second Full Moon of the month (making it a "blue Moon" by popular definition) and it was the closest Full Moon of 2023 (making it also a "super Moon" by another popular definition).
13900261 - The stars of the Big Dipper over the iconic peak of Pyramid Mountain from Pyramid Island, a popular location in Jasper National Park, Alberta, for nightscape and aurora photography. This was on a very clear night in mid-October, 2022, with many aspen stands still in full autumn colour. The images for this scene were shot at moonrise, with the waning gibbous Moon off frame at right lighting the sky blue and landscape with warm alpenglow moonlight. As bonus, a short bright meteor and its orange "smoke" trail appeared on the sky exposures. I shot this during the first weekend of the 2022 Jasper D
13899581 - The Full Moon rises in partial eclipse over the sandstone formations of Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in southern Alberta, on the evening of September 27, 2015. This was the night of a total lunar eclipse, which was in progress in its initial partial phase as the Moon rose this night. The blue band on the horizon containing the Moon is the shadow of Earth on our atmosphere, while the dark bite taken out of the lunar disk is the shadow of Earth on the Moon. The pink band above is the Belt of Venus.
13899230 - ull Moon setting over Rocky Mountains, taken from Rothney Astrophysical Observatory on August 28, 2007, night of total eclipse of the Moon. Umbral eclipse was over by moonset though the Moon was still in penumbral eclipse. Taken with Canon 20Da camera and 135mm lens at ISO800 and f/4.5 for 1/160 sec. Moon in blue of Earth's shadow on atmosphere.
13898393 - The 2-day-old crescent Moon with Earthshine, set in the stars and deep blue of twilight, on November 24, 2014. Taken from near Silver City, New Mexico with the TMB 92mm refractor at f/5.5 and Canon 6D at ISO 100. The stars are trailed slightly because the telescope was following the Moon at the lunar tracking rate.
13897910 - This is Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) over the Horseshoe Canyon formation near Drumheller, Alberta on the night iof July 10-11, 2020, taken about 2 a.m. MDT with the comet just past lower culmination with it circumpolar at this time. Warm light from the rising waning gibbous Moon provides the illumination. The comet’s faint blue ion tail is just barely visible even in the moonlit sky and low altitude. The glow of summer perpetual twilight at latitude 51.5° N still colours the northern horizon despite this being close to the middle of the night.
13999688 - Orion and the winter stars and constellations in a moonlit sky,on a chilly (-20°C) winter night on January 28,2023. Above Orion is Aldebaran and the Hyades star cluster in Taurus. Below Orion is Sirius in Canis Major. The red giant Betelgeuse and the blue giant Rigel stand out nicely above and below the Belt. Light from the first quarter Moon off frame illuminates the landscape. This serves as a good illustration of how the Belt stars in Orion point up to Aldebaran and down to Sirius.
13998603 - The planets Venus (brightest at centre) and Mars (upper left of Venus) in the moonlit and twilight sky over the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The stars Castor and Pollux in Gemini are above Venus. The star cluster Messier 44,the Beehive,in Cancer is to the left of Mars. This was May 27,2023,from the Sierra Cabins West property near Lundbreck,Alberta, shot during a workshop as part of the program for the Lightchasers Conference held in Pincher Creek,Alberta. Illumination is by moonlight and by a low-level lighting warm LED panel. The sky is blue with light from the waxing quarter Moon off
13998445 - The rising Full Moon of January 6,2023 over the Badlands of Horseshoe Canyon, near Drumheller,Alberta. Here the Moon is set a dark blue crepuscular ray (or more correctly,anti-crepuscular ray) converging on the point directly opposite the Sun. The ray was a shadow cast by clouds in the west, which parted enough for a few moments for the setting Sun to light the foreground, making for a colourful contrast between ground and sky.
13899272 - The Full Moon of July 31, 2015, an infamous “blue Moon”, the second Full Moon of July, rising over the skyline of Calgary, Alberta. This is one frame of a 480-frame time-lapse sequence taken with the Canon 60Da and 28-105mm lens. The location was Toronto Crescent.
